U-SoA Celebrates Pier Luigi Nervi

Now Open @ U-SoA: International Exhibition Celebrating Pier Luigi Nervi’s Life and Work as an Engineer and Architect

On Oct. 7, 2017, the international exhibit commemorating Pier Luigi Nervi, one of the greatest and most renown structural engineers of the 20th century, was opened to the public. Located in the Korach Gallery at the School of Architecture, the “Pier Luigi Nervi – Art and Science of Building” exhibit will remain open until Oct. 28, 2017.

Antonio Nanni, professor and chair of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, representing the American Concrete Institute South Florida Chapter, together with Consul General of Italy, Gloria Marina Bellelli, Dean of the School of Architecture, Rodolphe el-Khoury and Dean of the College of Engineering, Jean-Pierre Bardet welcomed guests with opening remarks regarding Nervi’s multifaceted individuality as a designer, builder, researcher and creator of new construction techniques.

More than 110 attendees participated in the opening ceremony and the event included a performance by the Graduate Jazz Ensemble from the Frost School of Music.

Sponsored by Buzzi Unicemen and Ruredil, two Italian ready-mix concrete and construction aggregates producers, the ceremony featured a keynote presentation by Christina Chiorino, an architect with a PhD in conservation of modern architectural heritage and in history of architecture. She discussed Nervi’s reinvention of ferrocement (thin-shelled reinforced concrete) and the masterpieces he created using this technique.

The exhibition, created for a more extended international and intercontinental tour, incorporates high-resolution reproductions of the original drawings of the Nervi projects and educational videos about Nervi’s life and work.

Nanni and Chiorino, in collaboration with Theodore J. Smulski, a senior structural engineer at Newark, Delaware-based DEDC who has more than 30 years of design experience, recently published an article about Nervi and the international exhibition celebrating his legacy.

For the event, wine was provided by Pazzione Wine Imports and hors d’oeuvres were served by La Moderna, an Italian restaurant located in Miami Beach.

You are invited to visit the exhibit in Korach Gallery (through 10/28) and leave your comments in the guestbook!
