The 2018 Vincent Scully Seminar.
U-SoA Presents New Lecture Series for 2018.

A new lecture series to commemorate Vincent Scully premieres (January 29th) at University of Miami School of Architecture. Teaching at the School of Architecture for nearly twenty years, Professor Scully was an important influence on University of Miami faculty and students and the residents of our region, and an architectural historian and author, whose inspirational teaching and writing influenced fifty years of world architecture.

Aspiring to Professor Scully’s high level of observation and critique, the series, includes a course and lectures to provide students with an experience of varied theoretical approaches to understanding buildings and their context. Introductory sessions of the course will introduce students to Professor Scully’s writings.

Three visitors, Alastair Gordon, George Baird and Neil Brenner, each with a unique perspective on the built environment, will share their knowledge and techniques for learning with U.M. students and a public audience. During a week-long visit, each visitor will present three lectures. The first two will be related to Scully’s work, in both research and practice; the third will describe his thoughts about Miami, following a class-time field trip with students to a Miami site of specific interest.

Students will read selected writings by each visitor in advance of his visit. Students will also participate in each visitor’s encounter with Miami, traveling together to the destination, and will select a reading about Miami for the visitor in advance of his visit. Yes, students will give homework to the faculty!

Also, a U-SoA Vincent Scully Memorial will take place on February 19th in Glasgow Hall from 6-8PM. (Program details to follow).
